Psychological safety can be described as feeling safe to live, work, learn, and speak up; feeling like you have a voice to contribute and challenge the status quo – without fear of punishment, embarrassment, or feeling marginalized.
Psychological safety and courage are both important for the development and sustainability of healthy cultures where inclusion allows individuals, organizations, and communities to flourish. One can’t exist without the other.
A culture of inclusion ideally starts at the top, but it can also begin with just one person – one leader – who has the right combination of curiosity, humility, and courage. Courageous leaders are needed to create courageous cultures.
Courageous leaders can ensure:
- Employees feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work feeling safe in all parts of their identity without judgment
- Organizations experience improved productivity and increased innovation, resulting in financial rewards due to decreased turnover, conflict, and outdated thinking
- Psychological safety exists within work teams, fosters a more positive, open-minded, and better-performing workplace that celebrates, values, and respects diversity
