Does Humor Help or Hinder Your Career?

A significant body of research supports the potential for humor to provide important benefits at work, including reduced stress, improved social interactions, and increased job satisfaction. However, humor also has the potential to be disruptive to work tasks and signal a lack of work commitment for employees who express humor. Our research provides evidence that gender and the associated stereotypes play an important role in determining these effects. Using a sample of 216 employees from a variety of industries, we find that using humor at work increases status and leadership evaluations for men, but the very same humor expressed by women decreases their perceived status and subsequent leadership evaluations.

Jerel Slaughter is the Eller Professor of Management and the department head for the Department of Management and Organizations.  He earned his PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Bowling Green State University.  He joined the faculty at Louisiana State University in 2000 and moved to the Eller College in 2002.  He has taught courses on Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Negotiations, and Decision Making to undergraduates, MBA and PhD students, and executives.  His research interests are in employee recruitment, selection, and deviant and unethical behavior in the workplace.   He also regularly consults with organizations on HR issues, primarily the development and evaluation of pre-employment selection tests.

Jon Evans is a fifth year doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona. He earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. His dissertation focuses on understanding the potential for leader displays of curiosity to influence follower job expectations and stimulate intellectual engagement. More generally, Jon’s research interests include understanding how individuals seek to manage impressions at work through multiple tactics, the influence of stereotypes on the appraisal of leader behavior, and the importance of investigating workplace deviance that includes not only the violation of prohibited behaviors but also the withholding of expected actions. He was awarded the Robbins Fellowship (for doctoral performance) in 2015, and has received grants to support his research from the Eller College and the University of Arizona Graduate & Professional Student Council. Prior to joining academia, Jon served in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps and worked for ExxonMobil supporting the execution of projects in locations such as Nigeria, Russia, and Qatar.
