The Effect of Bias in Leadership Decision Making with Michael Brainard

As humans, we are biologically hard-wired to see the world in a systemically distorted way. The distortions are driven by three specific biases. Michael Brainard has developed a model – the Bias Trifecta - which highlights the three specific biases and how they impact the way we perceive and process information, as well as make decisions.  These biases are inherent in our human nature and have a profound impact on the way we lead and live our everyday lives.

In this workshop, we will explore how unconscious bias affects leader’s decision-making in many ways, including hiring, performance management and succession planning.

Objectives:

• Discuss the definition of unconscious bias
• Explore the individual and collective impact of unconscious bias
• Discuss ancillary biases that compound judgement and decision making (e.g. confirmation bias)
• Build a common language around decision making as it relates to selection, performance management, team formation and development, and promotion
